What flour do you feed your sourdough starter?

With that being said, a sourdough starter will become much more vigorous when fed with fresh flour and will thrive better due to the increased nutrients in the flour.

What exactly is Sourdough Discard?

In simple terms, sourdough discard is sourdough starter that isn’t active anymore. Meaning, it has fed on the flour that it was fed and is now hungry again or is unfed starter.

Although you can use sourdough discard in a lot of recipes, it’s not quite as vigorous as active starter when rising bread dough.

Ingredients needed to make this recipe

  • Sourdough Discard – You can use active sourdough starter if you want. This recipe is such a good use for leftover sourdough starter or discard. The starter adds a depth of flavor you can’t get with regular waffle recipes.
  • Eggs
  • Salt
  • Olive Oil or Melted Butter – May also use melted coconut oil.
  • Honey or Sugar – The sweetener is totally optional. I prefer honey but you can use granulated sugar or brown sugar if you wish.
  • Baking Soda – The baking soda reacts with the acidity of the starter and makes it bubbly and lends to a fluffy waffle and acts as a leavening agent.
