Sowing Seeds

|

Well, it’s official! It’s February, which means it is time for sowing seeds! I want to share with you my set up for seed starting this year and some of the new plants we plan on growing this year!

Every single year in February I get so excited for the coming years garden season. I order way too many seeds and make grand plans! This year is definitely no exception!

When I placed my order, I focused on new varieties of heirloom seeds. We’ve grown the same variety of many seeds for years, however, this year, I felt like changing things up a bit.

Our system this year for starting seedlings is to use seed pods, seed trays with greenhouse dome lids, and seedling heat mats.

I’m going to be totally honest with you guys, I have a terrible track record with starting seedlings! They either don’t germinate or they don’t grow after a few weeks.

This new system will hopefully take care of all the issues we have had in the past.

Last year, my mom tried heat mats and had great success, so, I decided we have to try them, too!

So, the seeds we start first are Cabbage, Cauliflower, and Broccoli. This year, though, we also started Raddicchio and Brussel sprouts. We also sowed an entire tray of onions.

We feel very confident about these seedlings (if they do well) as far as when they are in the garden since we found the garden tunnels work so well! https://therosehomestead.com/do-garden-tunnels-really-work/

So far for the 2023 garden, we have hard white wheat and garlic already growing. Also, we will be moving our biggest crop to another property this year, our potatoes. This will free up a lot of extra space for more veggies and new crops that we have never tried because we didn’t have space.

We will trying all new varieties of tomatoes, lettuce, ground cherries, peppers, and carrots.

Follow along for updates! Gardening is one of my favorite hobbies! I get so much joy from watching the plants grow and the food that is supplied by them.

We pray that God will bless this years garden to be the best ever!

Here’s to Garden 2023!

  1. Hi Mary, I too am SOO excited for spring and sowing seeds this year! I really enjoyed watching your sowing seeds video – especially where you went through the varieties that you are planting for 2023. I wanted to give you a thumbs up but could not find the little icon. (I am of a certain age and am not so tech savvy). My daughter and I are discussing seed starting and I shared your link with her. I also wanted to let you know that I just found your site and am making your sourdough jalapino cheddar biscuits tomorrow! Thanks for posting!!!
