Sourdough Croutons

|

These Sourdough Croutons are so crispy and the perfect paring with a big salad or a bowl of soup.

We have been eating a lot of salads on the Homestead. Our lettuce has produced so well this year and we are thankful for that! When making a lot of salads, it’s important to me to shake it up and add lots of toppings to keep the salads interesting.

One topping we love is croutons. But, the store bought croutons are usually not that healthy, so, I decided to just make our own. I was surprised how quickly they come together.

If you have followed me for a while, you know I make a lot of sourdough bread. Having it always available, means I can make croutons in minutes anytime we want them.

Note: You can make these with yeasted bread as well!

As for which bread works best, I prefer day old bread that is already a bit dried out. The recipe doesn’t matter to me. I use Artisan or Sandwich bread recipes for these croutons.

Here are two bread recipes to try: https://therosehomestead.com/easiest-sourdough-artisan-bread-ever/ and https://therosehomestead.com/sourdough-sandwich-bread/

Honestly, these come together so quickly, I just make them as I am making my salad.

To whip these up, I use an air fryer. This is the air fryer I use: https://amzn.to/44hTpWp If you don’t have an air fryer you can preheat your oven to 400 degrees F and bake these for 6-10 minutes, checking after 5 minutes and every 2 minutes there after until golden brown and crispy.

In the air fryer, they only take 3-4 minutes at 400 degrees F.

To start, cut your bread into evenly sized cubes. Place the cubes in a medium sized bowl and drizzle with 2 teaspoons of olive oil. (You can make as many or as little as you like) Add salt and pepper to taste. I like to add Italian seasoning as well! Mix up to ensure all the cubes of bread are evenly coated with the oil and spices.

Preheat your air fryer or oven. Bake in air fryer for 3-4 minutes and in the oven for 6-10 minutes checking after 5 minutes and every 2 minutes there after until golden brown and crispy.

These croutons are also so delicious in soup or just as an afternoon snack!

I hope you will give these a try!

See you soon!

  1. Thank you for this review Mary. Definitely on my to do list. Wondering if these are good to make ahead and store in fridge?
