Why you will love this recipe for quick and easy homemade hamburger buns:

This recipe can be made start to finish in under 2 hours.

There is only one rise making it super quick to make.

These hamburger buns are made with a combination of whole wheat and all-purpose flour.

They are so soft and delicious making them the perfect vessel for burgers and sandwiches.

What you will need to make this recipe:

Flour:

I use a combination of freshly milled Kamut and all-purpose Kamut. You can make these with all all-purpose flour, 1/2 whole wheat, all whole wheat or any combination you choose.

Tip for using all freshly milled flour

If you want to use all freshly milled flour, mix the water and flour together and allow to soak for 30 minutes. This will soften the bran and germ. It’s harder to develop gluten and knead properly if these are not softened.

Yeast:

This recipe is made with instant yeast. However, if you only have active dry yeast on hand, you can use that as well.

To proof active dry yeast add 2 1/4 tsp of active dry yeast to 1/2 cup of warm water. Cover and let sit for 5-10 minutes or until foamy.

If it doesn’t foam after 10 minutes the yeast may be dead and you will need to buy a fresh batch.

Salt:

I prefer to use Redmond’s real salt.

Water:

Use a filtered, non-chlorinated water. Well water works great as well.

Olive Oil:

The olive oil gives the buns their soft texture. I like to use a high quality organic extra virgin olive oil.

You can use melted butter, coconut oil, or avocado oil if you want.

Equipment used to make this recipe:

If you choose to use freshly milled flour, you will need a grain mill. There are so many to choose from. There are impact mills and stone mills. I have used both and always go back to the Nutrimill impact mill.

For kneading, I use a stand mixer. Of course, you can knead by hand and it can be very relaxing.

It is relatively inexpensive compared to other mixers and does an amazing job!
