For this recipe you will need:

  1. 1-2 medium russet potatoes – This recipe can also be adapted to sweet potatoes.
  2. Salt
  3. Olive oil or Avocado oil – You only need a little oil for this recipe. It uses a fraction of the oil you would use in a deep fryer.
  4. Seasonings of your choice – You can make a seasoning blend of garlic powder, salt, and black pepper, or use ranch seasoning for ranch chips!

Step by Step instructions for making air fried potato chips

  1. Preheat Air Fryer to 390 degrees F.
  2. Wash and dry your potato and slice as thinly and even as possible. You can use a mandoline slicer or a very sharp knife to get thin slices. Aim for uniform slices.
  3. Put the sliced potatoes in a bowl of ice water to soak for 5-10 minutes. This helps remove excess starch and will produce a crispy chip.
  4. After soaking, put the potatoes on a wire rack over a baking sheet and pat dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
  5. Place a handful of the potato slices in a large bowl and spray with olive oil or avocado oil.
  6. Add salt and your favorite seasonings.
  7. Toss the potatoes to coat them evenly. I find it is important to do small batches at a time for best results.
  8. Place the chips in air fryer basket in a single layer.
  9. Let air fry for 2-3 minutes at time and check them. They will get crisp and golden brown quickly! The cooking time may vary depending on your air fryer, so check them every minute or so after the initial 2-3 minutes.
  10. Once they begin to brown, turn them with tongs and continue to fry for a couple of minutes and check again for brownness.
  11. Repeat the process until all potatoes are air fried.
  12. Place the air fried potato chips on a wire rack with a piece of parchment paper underneath for easier clean up.

Storage

Store leftover chips at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 2-3 days.

Quick tip:

Make large batches and allow them to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container.

Can I use other types of potatoes?

Yes, you can use whatever you have on hand. I find that russets fry up the most crispy potato chips!

Can I use any oil I prefer?

Yes, use any oil you desire. You only need a spritz or 2 to make these chips.

How long will these last on the counter?

I find that they will last for up to 2-3 days before they start to soften.

Having an arsenal of from scratch recipes not only makes for healthier meals for your family, but, can also prove to be very cost effective!
